Intensive Psychotherapy for the Adolescent
Bahn Geon-Ho

Abstract
Adolescence is the transitional period between childhood and adulthood. To treat adolescent patients, psychotherapists should understand the developmental process and tasks of the adolescent period. It must be considered that adolescents have two characteristics in the context of psychotherapy. First, the personality of the adolescent is in flux. Second, because therapy is often begun by parents, caretakers, or environmental factors, the important thing in adolescent psychotherapy is how to motivate the client to seek psychotherapy treatment on his or her own will. The intra-familial or parent-adolescent dynamic is also important, and therapists have to adopt a more active attitude, even from the first session. The personality characteristic of being in flux may be an obstacle in psychotherapy for adolescents. However, it can also be used as an important tool to improve symptoms, to guide patients back to the normal path and to change behaviors in real life.
